Hi Eitan,
Although I think it is a matter of personal taste, I will try to give my input…
I skied in Whistler 2 seasons ago (9 wonderful days). I’d rate this resort as “heaven on earth”. I still check the LiveCams, snow reports, resort news occasionally (even quite often...). I certainly plan to go there again!
Last season was my first time in Europe (for ski). I was in Mayrhofen (for 2 weeks). I liked it but not as much as Whistler. There were a lot of reasons of course; some have nothing to do with ski. I am a huge North America fun regardless. Also – I had fresh powder each and every day in Whistler and mostly – also clear blue skies! I had lots of ice and thin artificial snow for the majority of my stay in Mayrhofen…
This season I have spent 2 awesome weeks in Val Gardena. It rose just about the same feelings in me as Whistler has (if you can fall in love with a place – I have, twice!).
I would still rate Whistler as my first choice if I had to but… Val Gardena doesn’t fall back by much (and the food is even better).
Now to your questions: is it worth the “hassle” (meaning: the very long flight)?
For me: probably not, at least not each year.
If I can take 2 weeks off from work, I’d rather spend as much of it as possible skiing. I’ll probably leave skiing in North America again for the next time I am there during winter time.
If I could take 3 weeks off… then that would be a really tough choice!
In general – I’d say you should try at least once!
As I said: I will definitely go there again and I also plan to ski in Colorado at least once.
I have a feeling that my answer will not help you even a bit…

that coming to N. America to places like Colorado, Utah or British Columbia is not worth the trip.
Now that I have a little more experience of how European skiing is like and there are many things that I just love about it, Eitan you really need to experience places like Whistler, Vail & Aspen too
No question it is a schlep, but I don't remember anyone complaining after their ski vacation coming all the way from Israel.
The one thing that really stood out for me between skiing in Austria and the Rockies besides the snow quality, crowded slopes and lack of trees is that in Europe it seems like you spend more time on all kind of lifts or crawling across 5 mile catwalks that is considered a run in Europe than actualy skiing down a fall line.
The runs are very limiting, not as challanging and sometime super crowded.
On the busiest day in Vail, I can ski alone in places like Blue Sky Basin or Outer Mangolia with nothing between me and 15 - 30 minute run before hitting another lift.
When you finally come to Colorado and visit your friend I will show you what Charles,Doron, Yohanan, Boaz and Gary experienced.
Again, you need to try it at least once and than make your own decision.
