Malaria risk area in Thailand: Risk in rural areas that border Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar (Burma). Very limited risk in Phang Nga and Phuket therefore prophylaxis is not recommended for these two areas. No risk in cities and in major tourist resorts. No risk in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Pattaya, Koh Samui, and Koh Phanga
adequate medical treatment available
in Laos not available
Risk (predominantly P. falciparum) exists throughout the year in the whole country including urban areas, except there is no risk in the city of Vientiane.
Medicines that protect against malaria in this area include mefloquine (Lariam), doxycycline, or atovaquone/proguanil (Malarone), except in the northwestern provinces of Bokeo and Louang Namtha and the southern provinces of Saravan and Champasak where mefloquine may not be effective. Primaquine may be used in special circumstances (G6PD testing is required). Recommend evening and nighttime insect precautions in risk areas
